I have started my second semester of grad school. The above painting was done for my online landscape painting class. The assignment was to create atmosphere so I had to pale down and soften the background behind the cow. I realize that I tend to keep my backgrounds just as strong as the foreground which results in less depth. I found this to be a very mushy way to paint.

Nice study. I realize you like to saturate your backgrounds, but at the end of the day, this is just a study and you can paint the way you like outside of class, right? It's good to try it (painting "mushy")

Thanks Ed. You are right. If I continue to paint the way I already know I am not going to get much out of grad school. I have been on a cow kick lately. Those green winter hills are so beautiful.

love this. Cows are great subjects. I also love your saturated color.
